Julian Rucki Collection

All photos provided by Julian Rucki of Modesto, California.

The following pictures range in date from 1964 through 1966, taken in various locations in NJ (Atlantic Highlands, Red Bank, and Shipbottom).   Others are from St. Michael's, Maryland.

As we identify the various boats, owners, and locations we will update this page as well as list the individual boats in the "Boats by Name" section.

If you have any updates - please send them to the webmaster.

The first picture posted on the front page (shown below) had quite a few responses in identifying the boats, drivers and what was 'wrong'.  Here's the request and the answers:

Can you

1.  Identify the boats and people in this picture.

2.  Tell us what's 'wrong' with this picture.

Submitter Comments
Bruce Plaskett I don't know who's boats these are but the one in the middle looks a little off. The rider and driver seem too far forward. Did it have a V-Drive or an I/O in it?

The middle skiff is a rear engine skiff!! Right?
Kimberly Pearson JS-2 George Hope.

Partially obscured boat - Zbranak - possibly his boat/possibly him driving - engine is aft, behind the drive and rider - most likely a v-drive.

JS-17 - ??

JR/Magoo JS-2 is George Zebold Jr and Sr. - Sr. is driving.

JS-17 is Al Wack and Jim Rucki in the Mallolo - Al is driving.

Boat in question is JS-12 driven by Bill Darby - rider is Alfonse Mareau.  Boat is Wildcat.  At this time the boat was powered by a v-drive.  boat was the first fiberglass skiff built by Joe Julian.

The picture was taken in 1965 in Red Bank, NJ with the Molly Pitcher Hotel in the background.

Joe Julian Perri is not on the inside!
Julian Rucki This won't count, for I have the unfair advantage -

JS-2 is Miss Renee.  JS-17 Wildcat riding is my dad Jim Rucki and of course what I pointed out in the JS-18 was the V-drive Skiff with driver/rider in the center of boat.

Webmaster The boats are identified as follows:

JS-2 is George Zebold's Miss Renee driven by George Zebold Sr. with Jr. riding.

JS-17 is Al Wack and Jim Rucki in the Mallolo - Al is driving.

JS-12 is driven by Bill Darby with Alfonse Marequ riding.  This was Bill Darby's first fiberglass boat and yet another one of Darby's boats called Wildcat.  This rear engine boat was built by Joe Julian and was called St. Patrick before it was sold to Darby.  The mold for the St. Patrick was taken off a wooden boat that was owned by Ollie Olson (don't yet know the name of Ollie's boat).

The building in the background is the Eisner building on Front Street.

What's wrong with the picture - it's a rear engine boat - note the riders are in the middle of the boat.

Thanks for all the responses and it would appear that Magoo was correct.

A late entry but still interesting material

JS-12 the black boat in the middle was called "Wildcat" owned by Bill Darby and he was driving and says Joe Zabranick was his rider. He purchased the Joe Julian V-drive first built Glass skiff hull from him for $500.00 in 1962 and repaired it. The back end was splitting off. It only had a 36" bottom in it and would flat spin out. The back end finally broke off and was never used again.
Bill Darby to this day says that if that boat had a 42" bottom and was just reinforced in the back end that boat would have been out front.
It first was JS-6 called "St. Patrick" painted white with red numbers when Joe Julian first built it from an Olson's wooden hulll, I have a picture of it but cannot see the name on the boat the first mold was made from.

PS I will find out   Douglas Whichello

The  picture below was taken in Atlantic Highlands, NJ in the mid-60's.  The boat numbers are JS-3, JS-13, JS-38, and can't quite make out the numbers on the stripped boat.

Can you name the boats, drivers and owners? ...see below for answers.

THE JS-3 IS PETE DEPERTS NEW WOOD BOAT, THE JS-13 IS JIM RUCKI AKA
JR/MAGOO  THIS BOAT WAS PETE DEPERTS OLD BOAT THAT CAUGHT FIRE
IN A PARKING LOT. JIM LATER NAMED THE BOAT "FIRE SALE". THE JS 38 IS JOHN DEVITO AND THE STRIPPED BOAT IS JS-18 IN BLACK AND YELLOW STRIPES IS ART KINGS KING BEE. THE PICTURE IS IN ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NEW JERSEY.
