St. Lucie Lock and Dam Cruise

By Douglas Whichello and Gary Gifford

On Saturday the 21st the newly purchased JS-23 "PUFFIN" owned by Gary Gifford of Stuart (who raced Skiffs in the late 60s into the 70s and lived in Red Bank, N.J.) along with "Star Ship" and "Red Neck Yacht" put in at the ramp west of the St. Lucie locks and Dam to have a test run of both "Puffin" and the "Red Neck Yacht."

Puffin is a S&S built Skiff and needed the plate adjusted out and fine tuned by Mark VanWinkle after which it ran pretty darn good.

The 3 Skiffs attracted a lot of on lookers along the intercostal canal and with no speed restrictions we went east towards Indian Town pretty fast.

Boy are they building a lot of new BIG Yacht basins, it is a real nice river run for sure.   But if Douglas did not have BAD luck he'd have no luck at all. After jumping a 2ft wake of a 65ft Yacht which the STAR SHIP nose dove into and the Red Neck landed on top of with a bang, I started to smell and see GAS in the boat. By the time we got back to the ramp we had 3 gallons not in the tank now, the new gas tank got a seam that cracked, O WELL it did run really good now that the bottom is all redone and handled like a skiff should.

While I did own an old wooden JS in the 60's & 70's, the only thing I did was "WATCH" those races with envy in Red Bank, Atlantic Highlands and Pleasure Bay!!

Attached are some pictures of yesterday's adventure.  I've never met a bunch of nicer people than the guys who tinker with the skiffs.  Thanks to all.

(I'll get better with the photography!)
